Rawlings 5150 BBCOR Review – Alloy Bat Endorsed By Major Colleges
By jeff | January 13, 2012

The Rawlings 5150 BBCOR baseball bat is one of their top models. They also make a 5150 for other leagues like Senior League and Little League.
Rawlings also produces composite bats and the Exogrid series, but the 5150 Rawlings series is probably their hottest selling group.
They are usually known for their baseball gloves and accessories which have been a part of the game for decades, but they’re really starting to put out some high performance bats and with all the reviews coming in they must be well liked.
Their motto is “Your Swing. Maximized.” They designed their bats to be a game changer for you. We’ll get more into that later, but there are a few things you should know about this bat before you buy, so let’s find out why.

Rawlings 5150 BBCOR Bat Type
The Rawlings 5150 BBCOR is a -3 drop BBCA adult bat specifically created for high school and college baseball players.
It says BBCOR and BESR certified right on the barrel of the bat so you shouldn’t have any issues seeing it.
As far as today, this bat will be certified in high school and college play in 2012 and beyond. Rawlings didn’t mass produce this awesome bat just for 2011.
Rawlings 5150 BBCOR Bat Sizes
This bat comes in the four major sizes and weights that most guys can use in the two leagues I mentioned above. I don’t ever remember a player using a 31-inch bat in high school, but then again I went to a three year high school which was 10th through 12th grades.
I used a 34 inch, 32 ounce bat in high school and I also used a 34 inch bat in college. I very much wish I had today’s bats back then because they are a touch lighter today and the construction has advanced so much.
Here are the bat sizes for this Rawlings bat.
- 31″ 28 oz.
- 32″ 29 oz.
- 33″ 30 oz.
- 34″ 31 oz.

Rawlings 5150 BBCOR Bat Design
This Rawlings 5150 BBCOR -3 baseball bat is a fairly nice looking bat.
You can’t make every bat look the same. Some bats have elaborate graphics on it, some bats are plain ugly and then you have bats that are middle of the road. They look good.
The barrel is red and white with a little bit of silver and a little bit of black. The handle area has the same design as the barrel, while the grip has black with the Rawlings logo in silver.
The end cap is black and you can make out the Rawlings logo on there as well.
The knob of the bat is black and has their logo plus the size and weight of the bat.
Again, printed on the barrel is all of the certifications of this bat.
Rawlings 5150 BBCOR Customer Reviews
“My son tried out multiple BBCOR bats from the major manufacturers at a batting cage event, and found the 5150 to have the best pop, balance, and overall feel. After a short break in period, he is hitting about as far as…(read more here: Rawlings 5150 BBCOR Review)

Pros & Cons
Pros:
Even though I’m sure these colleges get some gear for free, I’m always excited when a school endorses a particular bat because you know it works.
I mean come on! Would a major college team really use a bad bat? No way! That’s why it’s exciting to see the universities of Virginia and South Carolina talk so highly of this bat.
This bat is used by a bunch of other top programs as well and the players all say it’s one of the best balanced bats out there, which enables them to have maximum pop.
Sure, there are some other flashy bats available but this one seems to have really made a good impression with some great baseball teams.
This Rawlings 5150 alloy bat has an unmatched combination of trampoline and durability and this is what has players raving about it.
Cons:
I don’t have any complaints about performance but the one thing that is a con for me and maybe for others is some of the design.
I don’t like the shiny black knob because it almost looks plastic. I’m also not a fan of the grip because it looks really cheap. It’s almost as if the grip was an afterthought.
I know you can strip this grip and put your own on but I wish Rawlings produced better grips.
